Philippine military slams ‘fabricated’ video of stand-off with Malaysian navy

The Armed Forces of the Philippines has slammed as “fabricated” a video about an alleged stand-off with the Royal Malaysian Navy over contested Sabah waters and fishing rights.

Manila’s navy confirmed it had sent a guided missile frigate, the BRP General Antonio Luna, to Malaysia for a long-planned joint military exercise.

On Twitter and Facebook, the armed forces late on Tuesday said a circulating 12-minute YouTube video entitled “Philippines vs. Malaysia: Tensions Rise over Sabah and the South China Sea” never happened.

The video – with images generated through AI and uploaded on InfoSpark Hub – opens dramatically with a Philippine Navy Corvette, the BRP Magat Salamat, cutting “through the early morning haze, moving steadily towards a cluster of fishing boats operating in the contested waters” on Monday, according to a narrative voice.

The Malaysian patrol vessel KD Pahang then moves to block the path of the Philippine corvette, “demanding, over radio, that the Filipinos change course and leave what Malaysia claimed as its territorial waters”.

The Philippine captain refuses to yield, according to the video. “He insisted, with unwavering conviction, that his ship was operating within Philippine waters, and that they would not be intimidated into retreat. For hours, the two warships floated just hundreds of metres apart, their guns uncovered and crews at battle station.”
