Philippine authorities have launched a special investigation into the fatal shooting of two Japanese men in one of Manila’s busy entertainment districts, after CCTV footage captured a coordinated attack that is believed to involve at least four assailants.

The double homicide occurred late Friday night on Miguel Malvar Street in the capital’s Ermita district – a popular area for tourists and nightlife – and near the five-star Sheraton Manila Bay hotel.

The unit tasked with investigating the murders, Shooting Incident Task Group Malvar, recovered a getaway vehicle on Saturday that had been abandoned a few hundred metres from the scene, according to a statement by Police Major Philipp Ines, spokesman for the Manila Police Department (MPD).

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and MPD’s special task group said they would “continue [their] focused efforts until all persons of interest are accounted for and justice is served”.

On Monday, the police said they had taken into custody two “persons of interest” and were studying CCTV footage from various areas of the city where the suspects could have passed by.

One CCTV video shows briefly the face of one of the suspects while buying a cigarette from a street vendor, according to ABS-CBNNews.
