Julie Eadeh, the new US consul general for Hong Kong and Macau, is set to arrive in the city at the end of this month, having received Beijing’s approval for the much-watched appointment, according to sources.

The Post reported in July that Eadeh, a career diplomat who served as the political section chief at the US consulate in Hong Kong and Macau during the 2019 protests, would take the role, subject to Beijing’s approval.

“Her agrément was granted recently, so she is set to come to Hong Kong,” said one diplomatic source, who requested anonymity.

Top diplomats, including ambassadors and consuls general, need the host nation’s agrément, or permission by the receiving state before they can perform their duties, according to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

A second source also confirmed she would arrive upon Beijing’s approval. “She is likely going to arrive in Hong Kong at the end of August,” the source said.

“It is good for the communication between the two sides. There are many issues that we need to talk to the other side about regularly,” the source added.
