A Hong Kong-based start-up has developed an artificial intelligence-powered system that detects the origin and size of factory emissions, which could be applied for monitoring purposes in mainland China and other countries, according to its founder.

ANTEI AI Innovation Hub created the AURA framework for real-time detection of industrial smoke emissions with an eye toward implementing the system across China, founder and group managing director Matey Yordanov said in an interview on Monday.

Before this framework was developed, there was no system in the market that could “highly and accurately detect emissions in real time, whilst also estimating how much has been emitted”, Yordanov, an alumnus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, said.

He said the AURA framework had already been deployed in a few Balkan countries and proved its effectiveness, without disclosing the specific markets where it was set up. The AURA system detects industrial smoke emissions through the installation of cameras or by using existing cameras deployed in a city.

By combining motion and chromatic information, the system can accurately identify the presence and type of smoke, even from a distance or under challenging environmental conditions, according to Yordanov.

Yordanov said the system’s use of AI substituted the need for “tens or even hundreds of people” in monitoring emissions. He added that the system has worked with “95 to 98 per cent accuracy, depending on the case”.
