Indonesian governor’s plan to shame ‘laziest’ staff online spurs debate

An Indonesian official is planning to shame the “laziest” civil servants in his province on social media in a bid to push them to improve their performance, with the move drawing praise from the public and criticism from several politicians.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi intends to publish the details of underachievers on the provincial government’s social media accounts from next month, according to a Jakarta Globe report. He also plans to put out a monthly list of top-performing employees.

“Those who work hard deserve open recognition,” Dedi said at a government performance review in Bandung on Monday, as quoted by the newspaper. “But those who do not, the people should know. We serve the public – not ourselves.”

Dedi, who has been dubbed the “content governor”, is no stranger to social media. Local media have attributed his rise in politics to his populist policies and high social media visibility. He has a team that includes seven videographers, according to Tempo news magazine.

“Starting November 1, every regional government organisation must announce the laziest employee in their organisation. Please state their name, address and photo, and I’ll post it on my TikTok,” he said, as quoted by PRFM radio.

Next month’s pilot programme will encompass three provincial agencies – the health office, education office and environmental office – before expanding to all 27 districts and cities under Dedi’s purview early next year.
