China and Indonesia have agreed to establish a satellite remote sensing centre as part of a joint project to improve resource management and environmental monitoring.

“It will provide strong technical support for both countries in resource management [covering areas] such as agriculture, forestry and water resources … and bring resource-sharing, complementary advantages and mutual benefits,” according to the Chinese Land Satellite Remote Sensing Application Centre.

The technology can monitor vessel traffic to detect illegal fishing activities, map coastal erosion and track the health of marine ecosystems.

The two countries will also collaborate on data-sharing, research, project development, knowledge transfer and capacity building.

The centre did not provide details of the location or timeline for the project, but said the agreement had been signed earlier this month and marked a “new stage” for their relations in this area.

China proposed the establishment of such a centre with a number of Southeast Asian nations in 2021.
