A Singapore private-hire driver has denied responsibility for a vulgar anti-Chinese slur that was seen flashing across an LED panel on the back of his car, insisting the message was remotely altered by someone hacking into his display system.

The footage, filmed on Thursday along Woodlands Centre Road – a route leading to the checkpoint connecting Singapore and Malaysia – went viral after being posted by the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page.

The clip shows a Honda Stepwagon Spada repeatedly displaying the message “F*** Chinese”, prompting members of the public to file police reports.

Police confirmed that a report had been lodged and investigations were under way, according to Chinese-language outlet Shin Min Daily News.

The driver, a 53-year-old man identified as Maman, told Shin Min that he was “wronged” and that the text did not originate from him. He had started his shift for ride-hailing platform Tada at about 7.30pm and worked until around 2am, saying he noticed nothing unusual during the journey.

He said he only discovered the video when a relative sent it to him roughly two hours after he returned home. When he checked the car, the LED panel had already reverted to its default message reading “Support Liverpool”, which he said appeared automatically each time the vehicle was restarted.
