Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Monday to reaffirm bilateral ties and discuss Taiwan and Ukraine issues.
“President Xi outlined China’s principled position on the Taiwan question” and “underscored that Taiwan’s return to China is an integral part of the post-war international order”, the embassy said, referring to World War II.
“The two presidents also discussed the Ukraine crisis,” it added. “President Xi emphasised China’s support for all efforts that are conducive to peace, and expressed the hope that the various sides would narrow their differences, reach a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement at an early date and resolve the crisis at its root.”
A senior Trump administration official confirmed that the call took place but did not provide details on its content or which side initiated it.
