Why a Brazilian ‘K-drama oppa’ dating service is being investigated for sexual exploitation

A dating platform in Brazil that markets paid encounters with Korean men styled as K-drama “oppa” is under investigation for sexual exploitation, with the South Korean consulate in Sao Paulo appealing for potential victims to come forward.

KDramaDate advertises itself as a service that lets women “relive the magic of K-dramas”, offering curated outings with Korean men at cafes, barbecue restaurants and popular city landmarks. One package includes what the site describes as an “intimate experience” in a motel or at the client’s home.

The consulate confirmed in late October that it had identified victims linked to the platform and had escalated its inquiry from suspected fraud to potential sexual crimes, according to notices published on its social media channels and reported on by The Korea Herald.

Investigators from the Sao Paulo state prosecutor’s office and local police are now examining the case.

KDramaDate’s website presents a carefully staged fantasy built around familiar K-drama tropes. Its homepage features couples posed in stylised scenes alongside a slogan that reads in Portuguese: “Reviva a Magia dos K-Dramas com seu Oppa!” (“Relive the magic of K-dramas with your oppa!”), a term that means “older brother” but is also used by Korean women to address older men in their social circle, often with romantic overtones.
