ISLAMABAD: The Director General of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Leah Gutierrez, along with her team, called on the Federal Minister for Railways, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Friday. The meeting focused on detailed discussions regarding the upgradation of Pakistan Railways’ flagship project, Main Line-1 (ML-1).

During the briefing, it was highlighted that ML-1 is the backbone of Pakistan Railways, facilitating nearly 80 percent of passenger traffic and 90 percent of freight traffic across the country. In view of the current condition of the infrastructure, the urgent need for upgradation of ML-1 was emphasized.

Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi stated that the ML-1 project holds key importance for the national economy, and its timely completion will not only modernize the railway system but also promote trade activities and enhance regional connectivity.

The ADB Director General expressed confidence in the progress made so far and reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to providing technical and financial assistance for the ML-1 project.

Both sides agreed to carry out the groundbreaking ceremony of the ML-1 Karachi to Rohri 480-kilometer project in July 2026 and reiterated their resolve to complete all necessary formalities in a timely manner.
