The agreement was the result of six months of negotiations and aims to enhance cooperation at all levels

Kuwait and China have formalized a framework agreement that outlines the technical aspects of their collaborative efforts in the realm of renewable energy.

Kuwait’s Undersecretary at the Ministry of Electricity and Water and renewable energy, Dr. Adel Al-Zamel, participated in the signing ceremony along with Ren Jingdong, deputy director of the Chinese National Energy Administration. The event took place at the headquarters of the National Energy Administration, attended by Kuwait’s Assistant Foreign Minister for Asia Affairs, Ambassador Sameeh Johar Hayat, who also serves as the rapporteur for the high-level Kuwait-China Committee responsible for overseeing agreements and MoUs execution. Other dignitaries included Kuwait’s Ambassador to China, Jassem Al-Najem, alongside several other officials from both nations.

Dr. Al-Zamel addressed the gathering, providing insights into the framework agreement, which was the result of six months of negotiations. This collaboration has led to the establishment of a plan, to be managed by the Chinese side, covering the third and fourth zones of the Al-Shagaya and Al-Abdiliya renewable projects. Each project is set to have a joint production capacity of 3,500 megawatts, with potential increases to 5,000 megawatts, KUNA reported.

Aligning with Kuwaiti leadership directives

In a related note, Ambassador Hayat emphasized that the framework agreement aligns with the directives of the Kuwaiti leadership regarding significant joint projects. He indicated that further details regarding major initiatives signed with China would soon emerge, including the agreement made in February to develop the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port. He further remarked that the relationship between China and Kuwait is experiencing remarkable growth across various sectors, showcasing the robust ties that connect the two nations.

Celebrating 54 years of diplomatic relations

The diplomat highlighted that His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s prior visit to China and his discussions with President Xi Jinping have further strengthened these relations. This mutual understanding has enhanced cooperation across all possible levels.

Moreover, Kuwait and China will commemorate the 54th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on March 22, a relationship that commenced in 1971.
