Approved projects in food security, health, education, and transportation support achieving the SDGs

The Board of Executive Directors of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), during its recent meeting, approved the allocation of over $1.4 billion to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in eight member countries. The approved development projects cover the food security, health, education, transportation, sanitation, and urban development sectors, contributing to the achievement of the SDGs, according to a statement.

Significant funding for health infrastructure projects

These approvals include EUR500 million in financing for the “Development of Disaster-Resilient Health Infrastructure” project in Turkiye, in addition to EUR200.20 million for the “Municipal Infrastructure for Recovery and Resilience” project. IsDB will provide $241.30 million in financing for the construction of five climate-resilient bridges in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh.

Enhancing food security and healthcare in Nigeria

Nigeria will receive a total of $102.38 million to enhance food security, improve healthcare infrastructure, and promote excellence in medical education. The IsDB’s Board of Directors also approved $92.98 million in financing for the health sector in Uzbekistan, in addition to $10 million to support the development of oncology services (Phase II).

Improving regional connectivity in Togo

IsDB allocated EUR141.44 million to Togo to support the rehabilitation of the border road (CU18) between Ghana and Benin, enhancing regional connectivity, reducing transportation costs, and supporting food security.

Investing in education for children in Cameroon

To strengthen basic education in Cameroon under the SMART-Ed initiative, the Bank allocated EUR36.80 million, ensuring high-quality education for 154,000 children.

Addressing sanitation and employment in Burkina Faso

In Burkina Faso, EUR35.07 million was allocated to improve sanitation and reduce flooding in the suburbs of Ouagadougou, while creating employment opportunities for women and youth.

Supporting rural development in Sierra Leone

In Sierra Leone, $30.48 million was allocated to support livestock and livelihood development, contributing to poverty reduction, enhancing food security, and creating employment opportunities in rural areas.

These projects further aim to promote sustainable and inclusive development, positively impacting the quality of life in communities across all ISDB member countries.
