Chinese President Xi Jinping said China’s ties with Malaysia were entering a “golden era” as he began talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, amid accelerated efforts by Beijing to court its Asian neighbours amid an escalating trade war with Washington.

In his opening remarks, Xi noted that the two nations established diplomatic relations more than 50 years ago and that both sides supported each other and worked together even through the Covid-19 pandemic.

“China-Malaysia relations are ushering in a new golden era,” he told Anwar, adding that the long friendship between the two countries was a “precious asset” that must be cherished.

Xi said China was willing to further develop its ties with Malaysia “in a high-level strategic direction” and make greater contributions to regional prosperity and stability.

Anwar, meanwhile, touted China as a friend and a “very important partner”, adding that he – and many Malaysians – looked up to China and Xi’s leadership of the world’s second-largest economy.

“President Xi exemplifies a new type [of] leadership, who talks about growth and investment and economic advancement, who talks about elevating [people from] poverty … and more [importantly] shared prosperity and civilisation, which is hardly expressed by any modern leader in this world,” he said in brief comments. “We admire your tenacity and for that, Malaysians welcome you … not only as president of a great country … but as a true friend.”

Anwar said the two countries would work together in areas including trade and investment as well as in new technologies such as artificial intelligence.
