Exasperated families at a hospital were anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones after the blast near the landmark Red Fort killed at least nine people on Monday evening.
The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act is used to investigate and prosecute acts related to “terrorism” and activities that threaten India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Monday’s explosion occurred near a metro station in Old Delhi, leaving mangled bodies and wrecked vehicles scattered throughout the busy area.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told reporters that the blast had occurred in a “slow-moving vehicle” that had stopped at the Red Fort traffic signal.

Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited the site, said authorities were “exploring all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation, taking all possibilities into account”.
