My top 10 things to watch Thursday, Nov. 6 1. The S & P 500 was headed for a higher open this morning after investors yesterday shook off some of the AI-stock valuation worries that slammed the market on Tuesday. Bond yields were lower this morning. Job cuts last month hit their highest level for any October in 22 years, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas . 2. Club name DuPont delivered a solid but confusing earnings report. Management announced accelerated stock buybacks, but its forecasts for current-quarter sales and adjusted profits came in below estimates. Shares, which were down 2% on the news, have been soaring since the chemical giant completed the spinoff of Qnity Electronics. Qnity will provide a business update after the market closes today. Also on tonight’s earnings docket is Club name Texas Roadhouse . 3. Shares of Solstice Advanced Materials declined more than 2.5% this morning after the company basically matched estimates in its first quarterly results since last Thursday’s spinoff from Club name Honeywell. Solstice makes refrigerants and electronics materials. Solstice has been volatile, rising nearly 11% yesterday after a four-session losing streak since it started trading as a separate company. Unlike DuPont shares, Honeywell stock has not done much since the Solstice spin. 4. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said yesterday that “China is going to win the AI race,” according to the Financial Times. Shortly after that, Huang released a notably softer statement, saying “China is nanoseconds behind America in AI.” He added, “It’s vital that America wins by racing ahead of and winning developers worldwide.” Those are stark comments. 5. Bloomberg reported yesterday that Club name Apple is going to use an AI model developed by Alphabet ‘s Google to help revamp Siri. In turn, the iPhone maker would have to pay the tech behemoth $1 billion each year. 6. Qualcomm beat estimates on quarterly EPS and revenue, while issuing a current quarter guidance range at the midpoint above estimates. However, the numbers, taken as a whole, are being regarded as a disappointment for this hype artist. Shares slipped more than 1% following the print. 7. Club name Eli Lilly said a mid-stage trial of its experimental amylin obesity drug in a once-a-week shot helped patients lose 20.1% of their body weight at 48 weeks. Lilly said late-stage trials will now begin. Amylin-based treatments, like this eloralintide, are seen to have similar results as the GLP-1 class of drugs, which include Lilly’s weight-loss treatment Zepbound. Lilly shares rose modestly this morning, building on a five-session winning streak. 8. Is there a collapse in the home improvement story? Bad quarters from building products maker Owens Corning and decking manufacturer Trex are not a good sign. It’s terrible timing. Club name Home Depot has felt it, too. The stock, which ran up ahead of the Fed’s September interest rate cut, has dropped 10% since then. 9. Lyft shares gained nearly 7% this morning after the ride-hailing company reported an earnings beat late yesterday. I think it was a better quarter than rival Uber’s release, whose stock took a hit earlier this week after posting results. 10. DoorDash stock sank nearly 13% after the food delivery service reported a mixed quarter, missing on earnings per share and beating on revenue. DoorDash expects to spend “several hundred million dollars” next year on initiatives aimed at growing the company. A year of spending? The market doesn’t like it.
