The 12-year-old son of Malaysia’s firebrand former minister Rafizi Ramli was attacked with a syringe in a shopping centre car park on Wednesday afternoon, in what the ex-cabinet member said was a premeditated assault likely aimed at silencing his strident views.

The attack happened at a shopping centre in the administrative capital of Putrajaya, as Rafizi’s wife and son were about to enter their car.

“Suddenly a man dragged my son and stabbed him with a syringe,” Rafizi said in a statement, adding he believed the two assailants – both dressed in black and wearing full face helmets – were lying in wait to attack “at the right time”, based on CCTV footage of the incident.

Rafizi said his son was brought to the nearby UPM general hospital immediately after the attack for treatment.

He did not describe the contents of the syringe, saying that he would leave it to the police and hospital to release further updates.

“In my time as a public facing politician, this is the first time my family has become a target of attacks and threats such as this,” Rafizi said.
