A new survey has found that both Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh enjoy high approval ratings, beyond 70 per cent ahead of the coming general election.
Data from the SensingSG survey of 1,504 respondents conducted by market research company Blackbox Research between March 28 and Tuesday showed that Wong enjoyed a 75 per cent approval rating, while Singh had a mark of 71 per cent.
The data, released on Friday, comes as Singapore prepares for an election that is widely expected to take place in the coming weeks.
Wong, who has yet to announce the exact polling date, is seeking the public mandate as he leads the incumbent People’s Action Party (PAP) in the top post for the first time since taking over from Lee Hsien Loong last May.
The quarterly survey found that Singh’s approval rating had increased by seven percentage points from the previous quarter, despite the legal controversies surrounding him earlier this year.
On February 17, Singh, the Workers’ Party chief, was fined S$7,000 (US$5,275) for each of two charges of lying to a parliamentary committee investigating the conduct of his former MP Raeesah Khan. Khan had lied in parliament about accompanying a sex assault victim to the police station. Singh is appealing the conviction and sentence.
