Lau made the remarks during his set at the Singland Festival at the Marina Bay Sands convention centre on Saturday, saying he was speaking out “for the sake of future artistes” after struggling to connect with fans in the audience.
“There’s a big problem. I can’t see any of you … I apologise for this situation. I hope that after today, no other singer, no other performer will perform in this place again,” he told the crowd.
“It’s not anyone’s fault. It’s just that this is not a place for performing. If I’m standing here, they can’t see me, they can’t see me, nobody can see me. And the most important thing for me is, I want to see all of you.”
Lau, who is based in China and South Korea, added that the venue layout had forced him to change his show. “I’m only doing this for the sake of future artistes because it’s actually very hard to perform here. The set list I prepared for today, I couldn’t perform it the way I wanted because I want to see all of you.”
Many concertgoers similarly voiced their frustration, but praised Lau’s calm and diplomatic approach to the situation.
