SPI-based inflation nominally down – Business Recorder

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index (SPI)-based inflation showing a negative trend as it nominally decreased by 0.01 percent for the week ended on August 21, 2025, compared to 0.31 percent increase in the previous week.

A decrease is observed in the prices of electricity charges for Q1 9.01 percent, diesel 4.46 percent, moong 1.71 percent, potatoes 1.15 percent, bananas 0.92 percent, mash 0.88 percent, pulse gram 0.66 percent, and masoor 0.45 percent.

On the other hand, major increase is observed in the prices of tomatoes 19.87 percent, onions 10.85 percent, wheat flour 9.38 percent, chicken 3.63 percent, garlic 2.28 percent, LPG 1.39 percent, sugar 1.20 percent, gur 0.82 percent, eggs 0.73 percent, shirting 0.13 percent, long cloth 0.09 percent, and lawn printed 0.08 percent.

Weekly SPI inflation up 0.31pc

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 18 (35.29 percent) items increased, eight (15.69 percent) items decreased, and 25 (49.02 percent) items remained stable.

The year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 2.30 percent.

Major increase is observed in the prices of ladies sandal 55.62 percent, gas charges for Q1 29.85 percent, sugar 26.11 percent, beef 13.03 percent, gur12.44 percent, vegetable ghee 2.5kg 11.60 percent, firewood, and moong 11.41 percent each, vegetable ghee 1kg 11.05 percent, bananas 9.28 percent, cooked beef 8.06 percent and lawn printed 7.40 percent, while major decrease is observed in the prices of onions 45.99 percent, garlic 25.25 percent, maash23.47 percent, potatoes 20.66 percent, electricity charges for Q1 18.12 percent, tea Lipton 17.93 percent, pulse gram 16.51 percent, wheat flour 9.34 percent, masoor7.42 percent, and LPG 4.0 percent.

The SPI for consumption groups up to Rs17,732 with an increase of 0.20 percent recorded at 318.59 points compared to 317.94 points in the previous week.

The SPI for the consumption group of Rs17,732 to 22,888 nominally down by 0.01 percent was recorded at 317.95 points against the previous week’s calculation of 317.97 points.

Whereas, the SPI for the income group Rs22,889-29,517 with an increase of 0.15 percent was recorded at 341.36 points against the previous week’s recording of 340.84 points.

The SPI for the income group Rs29,518-44,175 with an increase of 0.22 percent was recorded at 329.41 points against the previous week’s reading of 328.69 points and SPI for the monthly income group above Rs44,175 registered a decrease of 0.02 percent at 328.61 points against 328.66 points of the previous week’s calculation.

The combined SPI for all expenditure groups recorded at 329.11 points compared to 329.94 points of the previous week, registering a nominal decrease of 0.01 percent.
