TikTok US shakes up leadership in e-commerce, policy with looming sell-or-ban deadline

TikTok has weakened the roles of two US-based executives in a leadership reshuffle, as the short-video app operator faces an uncertain future in its largest market, with a ban deadline looming unless Beijing-based owner ByteDance divests.

Nicole Le Bourgeois, who leads TikTok Shop’s US operations, no longer directly reports to TikTok e-commerce head Bob Kang Zeyu. He has been moved under Mu Qing, who previously served as vice-president of the online shopping business for Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Mu now oversees global e-commerce for TikTok, according to one of the people. He is among several managers who have been moved to TikTok from Douyin in recent years. Others included Kang, previously in charge of Douyin’s online shopping business, and Fiona Zhi Ying, a former Douyin vice-president who now leads TikTok product development.

Le Bourgeois, an Amazon.com and L’Oreal veteran, would continue to focus on his work with US-based merchants selling in the market, Business Insider reported on Thursday. However, his role has been diminished, as he now reports to the second in command.

The other leadership change involved Michael Beckerman, formerly TikTok’s US public policy chief who has been a key figure in fighting the sell-or-ban law. Beckerman stepped down from his position, but would remain with the company as an adviser, one source said.

His departure followed that of Blake Chandlee, who oversaw advertising sales and marketing at TikTok. Chandlee also transitioned to an advisory role last month, technology news outlet The Information reported last week.
