One such high-profile exchange was the state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Kuala Lumpur in May, when China and Malaysia sealed trade and investment deals as both countries sought further diversification to counter the impact of US tariffs. Trump and Anwar also witnessed the signing of a “peace accord” between Thailand and Cambodia aimed at resolving their border dispute, which would unravel in a matter of weeks. As Asean deepened economic partnerships with countries outside the bloc, it also welcomed its 11th member, East Timor.
