US military seeks to boost joint operations training in Pacific as China’s strength grows

The United States is seeking to improve its joint operations training in the Pacific amid mounting tensions with China.

With China’s military growing in strength, the Pentagon wants a “sea-change” in the way different services rehearse for combat, according to The War Zone, a US military news website.

Instead of each service conducting their own manoeuvres to prepare for the same kind of scenario, the joint rehearsals aim to get a much clearer idea of the requirements for complex combat engagement, vice-admiral Michael Boyle, the director of navy staff, told a conference in Maryland this week.

The People’s Liberation Army has also been looking to improve the coordination between different services and in domains such as space, cyber, and electronic warfare.

Boyle, who did not directly name China according to the report, said the different services were looking for “a lot more fidelity, a lot more joint flavour” in training exercises.

He said specialists from the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Cyber Command were all taking part in the drills, running tactical-level rehearsals to figure out “how do I sense and make sense”.
