LAHORE: The year 2025 proved to be a satisfactory one for Pakistan’s hydropower and water sectors as WAPDA consistently supplied clean, green and low-cost hydel electricity to the national grid. Despite diverse and serious challenges, the authority also achieved several key milestones on its under-construction mega projects.
According to the WAPDA, its 22 hydel power stations collectively generated 33.12 billion units of electricity in 2025, accounting for nearly 30 percent of total power generation in the national system. With an average tariff of just Rs 3.83 per unit, WAPDA’s hydel electricity continued to subsidize the country’s overall power sector, making a significant contribution to economic stability and social development.
Compared to the basket tariff, hydel power from WAPDA remains the most affordable source of electricity in Pakistan. Additionally, it is the most environment-friendly energy source, as it produces zero carbon emissions, an important factor in the context of global climate challenges.
Statistics released by the WAPDA show that during 2025, Tarbela Hydel Power Station generated 14.3 billion units, while Tarbela 4th Extension contributed 5.6 billion units. Ghazi Barotha Hydel Power Station produced 6.5 billion units, Mangla Hydel Power Station 3.6 billion units, Warsak Hydel Power Station 0.77 billion units, and Chashma Hydel Power Station 0.79 billion units. The remaining 1.56 billion units were generated by three high-head hydel power stations, Jinnah Hydel Power Station, and other small hydel power stations.
During the year, construction work also progressed at a satisfactory pace on WAPDA’s eight under-construction projects, including Diamer Basha Dam, Mohmand Dam, Dasu Hydropower Project, Tarbela 5th Extension, and the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV).
